Sid, as he was known, was a life long resident of Kandos. He was born at Rylstone in 1891 and settled here when the cement company first started operating. As a young man he began business as a carrier with horses and drays; he also operated a horse drawn lorry. In the town are two hotels and the Church of England for which he carted the stone; he also carted the gravel to form the platform of the Kandos railway station. He enlisted as the outbreak of WWI, being one of the first in the district to do so. He joined the first AIF in the 49th Battalion, Australian field Artillery. After a short turn in England, he saw service in France at Mons, Bullecourt and Agincourt. In returning to England he was awarded the Military Medal, which was presented to him by the late King George V, at Buckingham Palace. Mrs Robbins pre-deceased Sid by 9 months. Madge Maude Robbins was born on the 7th of July 1895 at Widen. She went to school just out of Mudgee. She died on the 29th June 1963. Madge married Sid on the 7th of April 1920, who was born at Little Springs Rylstone. She died in Rylstone hospital. After the funeral service the cortege was led by members of the RSL down the main street of Kandos. The late Sid Robbins was the foundation member and trustee of HGC, president of Kandos RSL bowling club, and former councillor of Rylstone Shire Council. Sid was a keen golfer and bowler and was well known throughout many parts of NSW where he competed in the sports for 40 years. To his sorrowing family of four daughters, Gloria (Mrs Holman, Cronulla), Lola (Mrs Phillips, Kandos), Gwen (Mrs Pennell, Kandos), Madge (Bebe) (Mrs Verren, Sydney), James Robbins and Keith Robbins of Kandos and sons-in-law, grandchildren, also his brothers and sisters, sincere sympathy in the loss of a good father and friend is extended. Labor Party Pays Tribute:Tributes were paid to the late Mr Sid Robbins at the last meeting of the Rylstone Kandos branch of the A.L.P. The meeting was opened by Mr Charlie Robbins, the Senior Vice-President, and before dealing with matters in hand, everyone expressed their sympathy to the family of the late President, Mr Sid Robbins, whose funeral was held that afternoon—Tuesday, March 29. Secretary (Sam Cuddie) spoke of the good work and time Sid had done and put into the A.L.P. Branch. It was pointed out by other members that Sid had been a faithful member of the branch for many years and president for over ten years. All agreed that Sid Robbins was not only a good branch member but a solid citizen and a good friend to many. As a mark of respect for him, the election of officers for this year was postponed to a later date. Previous | Content | Next | |
